A little known sanctuary hidden near the heart of Cornwall’s china clay industry is the enchanting Victorian gardens of Menacuddle Well. Visitors from April onwards are treated to a spectacular display from the rhododendron bushes in full bloom. The gardens present a place where the senses are treated to vivid colours and gentle sounds from the connecting stream and waterfall, offering a peaceful sanctuary.
Gifted to the community in memory of an only son, lost in WW1, Menacuddle Well and its surrounding gardens are maintained by the Friends of Menacuddle Well.
In certain weather conditions, you may notice the water flowing through this tranquil delight has a milky white appearance which comes from the local china clay.
Suitable for families and pets, this beautiful haven is an ideal spot to enjoy a picnic on the grass or the wooden tables near the stream. Whilst exploring, look out for the Druid’s Chair and Menacuddle Holy Well. It is said that if a person drops a pin into the well and makes a wish, that wish will be granted. There is also a quiet bench near the lily pond where you can simply rest and relish your surroundings.
Be aware that parking is limited to a handful of spaces and there are no toilet facilities. Menacuddle Well is accessed from a sharp turn off a busy road so we would advise approaching from the south.
